This piece is based on an early souvenir jacket produced in the late 1940s, during the formative years of the sukajan.

This model features an arrangement unique to Tailor Toyo. The face side is designed in an all-black body with a roaring white tiger motif. While the vintage piece that served as its source originally employed a vivid multicolored palette, this version has been reinterpreted in a monochrome scheme. The embroidery is executed primarily with white thread, while the direction of the stitching is carefully varied from section to section in order to express the tiger’s powerfully built, muscular form. In addition, touches of grey and black are applied in selected areas to further emphasize depth and dimension. The bamboo leaves and rocky ground in the lower portion may at first appear to be rendered in the same color as the tiger, yet each is in fact embroidered in subtly different shades. A total of seven different thread colors are used throughout, resulting in a richly detailed and luxurious embroidery design that stands as one of this piece’s defining characteristics.
In contrast, the reversible side features a Japan map motif. The body is rendered in a purple-grey tone inspired by the beautifully faded colors seen in vintage garments, while a map of Japan and a dragon are embroidered entirely in black. Although vintage originals were often executed in multiple colors, the distinctive dimensionality of yokoburi embroidery preserves the strength and impact of the design even when expressed in a single tone. By placing the embroidery on a body with an inverse color arrangement—where the black beneath the sleeves appears deeper in tone than the grey of the main body—the overall impression is elevated to something more refined and sophisticated. Even in the 1940s, souvenir jackets were made using the same embroidery pattern in different colorways, and this piece has been carefully crafted as a special garment that combines the enduring charm of vintage embroidery with the distinctive appeal of an original color composition.
