During World War I, soldiers wore breeches—jodhpurs-style trousers—but by World War II the U.S. military had shifted to full-length trousers, officially adopted by the Army Air Corps in 1937. However, the first trousers issued received poor evaluations from soldiers, prompting the military to bring civilian manufacturers into the production process in order to improve quality. Through repeated refinements, a wide range of military chino patterns was eventually developed.
