This souvenir jacket is based on a custom-ordered piece made in the early 1950s for a U.S. serviceman named Carl.
The 17th Communications Squadron of the U.S. Air Force and the 17th Light Bombardment Wing were stationed at Pusan East Air Base, K-9, in Korea from May 1952, where they served together during the Korean War. The embroidery design features a squadron motif, depicting a cat and mouse character wearing communications equipment in a humorous, playful style.
Although this jacket is made in a reversible specification with the same embroidery motif on both sides, it is an exceptionally rare style. The black side features larger lettering for the unit name and a cat without whiskers, while the blue reverse side features smaller lettering and a cat with whiskers. Each detail has been carefully reproduced from the original vintage piece.
The charming, comical embroidery reflects the artistic sense and playful spirit of the serviceman who ordered it. At the time, souvenir jackets with such military-inspired motifs were produced only in limited numbers as custom orders for individual units, and very few surviving examples are known today.
Faithfully revived under the double name of BUZZ RICKSON’S and KOSHO & CO., this is a truly special piece worthy of reproduction—one that captures both the historical atmosphere of the original and the meticulous craftsmanship of Japanese vintage reproduction.

“KOSHO & CO.” × “BUZZ RICKSON’S” SPECIAL EDITION
A special double-name edition by Tailor Toyo’s “Kosho” Special Edition line and the military heritage brand “Buzz Rickson’s.”
In the 1950s, embroidery shops could be found around U.S. military bases throughout Japan, taking custom embroidery orders from American servicemen as souvenirs of their time overseas. Drawn by the opportunity to have lavish, highly detailed embroidery made at an accessible price, many soldiers ordered their own distinctive “sukajan” jackets. At the time, the exchange rate was fixed at 360 yen to one U.S. dollar, allowing them to commission richly embroidered pieces at a relatively low cost.
As this culture of the sukajan began to flourish and reach its golden age, garments such as the one presented here came into being. This special piece captures the spirit of that era, combining the decorative beauty of Japanese embroidery with the atmosphere of postwar American military culture in Japan.
