During the Second World War, the 100th Infantry Battalion was formed by Japanese Americans from Hawaii. Their remarkable advance on the Italian front became one of the driving forces behind the U.S. Army’s formation of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, joined by volunteer Nisei soldiers. Their achievements were extraordinary, and it is no exaggeration to say that the unit played a significant role in improving the standing of Japanese Americans in the United States at the time.
This shirt was created to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the formation of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, with artwork designed by Jackson Morisawa. The design proudly depicts scenes from the European theater, the unit’s famous motto “GO FOR BROKE,” as well as regimental and division insignia, all rendered with a strong sense of history and pride.
The fabric has also been carefully reproduced based on a vintage original. It is made from cotton poplin with a subtle rib-like texture in the weft, giving it a distinctive hand that combines softness with a lightly crisp, dry feel against the skin. The original piece was produced by Polynesian Sportswear, a brand of Polynesian Casuals, a company that also handled production for shirts and dresses from well-known Hawaiian labels of the era.
