Marihini", which has many original patterns and is popular among collectors, is a brand developed by Marihini Sportswear, which was established in 1952. Raymond Sasaki, the founder of the company, had an artistic mind, and during the war he produced block-printed tablecloths (a printing method in which patterns are applied by hand-carved woodblocks) at the request of Sears, while at the same time wholesaling fabrics at a store called Hand Block Shop. With designer Frank Yastrow Oda, he began manufacturing aloha shirts. Raymond Sasaki designed the structure of Malihini, and skilled designers such as Frank Oda and Lewis Russell created the patterns, creating a number of popular products. Malihini is also known as the brand that pioneered the new aloha shirt trend with innovative ideas such as expressing Japanese patterns by stencil dyeing, focusing on unique designs not seen in other brands.
This time, Frank Oda created this reissue design based on the motif of the Kamehameha royal family. It was very controversial at the time of its release because the portrait of the royal family was turned face down when made into a shirt. KING KAMEHAMEHA", "KING KALAKAUA", and the problematic "QUEEN LILIUOKALANI" are realistically depicted on a ground composed of glass mat and night-blooming Sirius.
