The history of Hawaiian workwear—often regarded as the very origin of the Aloha shirt—began when Japanese immigrants crossed the ocean and started new lives in Hawaii. As they settled into their new environment, they soon found that the traditional garments they had brought from Japan were not suitable for the demanding conditions of plantation and field work. What was needed instead were durable, practical work garments capable of withstanding the rigors of daily labor.
In 1922, Kayoji Yasuda, a Japanese immigrant, founded Union Supply Company in Hawaii. By providing high-quality, reliable workwear designed specifically for local working conditions, the company quickly achieved success and expanded its business. Among the garments produced by Union Supply were shirts and blouses made from the distinctive Palaka check fabric. Though simple in construction, these garments offered both durability and ease of movement, qualities essential for labor in Hawaii’s plantations. Their practicality and comfort quickly earned widespread popularity, and the design soon came to be recognized as the quintessential form of the classic Palaka work shirt.
