This piece is titled “Hawaiian Monarch”—a tribute to the royal heritage of Hawaii. The shirt features the Hawaiian Crest (the royal coat of arms of the Kingdom of Hawaii) boldly displayed across the entire garment, set against a background of traditional Polynesian tapa patterns. If you look closely, you’ll find the names of Hawaiian royalty—such as Kamehameha, Kalākaua, and Liliʻuokalani—subtly woven into the design, making this shirt a garment of significant historical value. This particular colorway, composed in harmonious tones, is faithfully inspired by a vintage piece that was only recently discovered. For Sun Surf, this marks the very first reproduction of this remarkable design.

The brand behind this original piece, "Charlie Chan," opened its doors on Nuʻuanu Avenue in downtown Honolulu during the late 1930s, just as the aloha shirt was beginning to emerge. Starting out as a tailor shop, Charlie Chan quickly established itself in the heart of the city. Unusually for its time, the brand actively promoted itself through energetic advertising campaigns in period magazines and newspapers, steadily expanding its customer base. Alongside other pioneering labels like Ellery Chan’s “Aloha” brand and Koichiro Miyamoto’s “Musashiya Shoten,” Charlie Chan is recognized as one of the key brands that supported and shaped the early days of the aloha shirt tradition.

SUN SURF SPECIAL EDITION
Aloha shirt - the garment that symbolizes the paradise called Hawaii. However, its origin has much to do with the Japanese immigrants to the islands, and thus the shirt designs range from tropical patterns to that of oriental. In the mid-20th century, when Hawaii became a popular tourism cite, Aloha shirts were in great demand as a souvenir. With this background did the designs become even more diverse, some of which still appear to this day as incredibly rare vintage. “Sun Surf Special Edition” has a high regard for these textile designers of the time, and it is dedicated to creating complete replicas of such exquisite vintage, by precisely mirroring such features as the multicolor and impressive patterns or the various use of fine details, many of which have tended to be lost over time.
