In the early 1940s, as the United States entered the height of World War II, national resources had to be concentrated toward the war effort.
As part of this effort, the Wartime Production Board introduced strict regulations on the manufacture of civilian consumer goods, including clothing. In particular, cotton and metal components used in garments—such as rivets and buttons—were prioritized for military use. Workwear as a whole, including jeans and denim jackets, was therefore greatly affected.
Under the guidance of the Board, details considered non-essential or excessive were thoroughly eliminated. Branded tack buttons were replaced with ready-made, generic ones; the number of front tack buttons was reduced from five to four; and specifications such as chest pocket flaps and their buttons were omitted. Through these changes, each part of the denim jacket was significantly simplified as a wartime specification, transforming it into a rugged, purpose-driven design rooted purely in practicality.
In addition, many skilled sewing workers of the period had been assigned to military production, and it was common for less experienced workers to be placed on workwear sewing lines. As a result, the sewing quality often became rough and uneven, with irregular stitching, distortion, and slight misalignment appearing throughout the garments. Yet even re-sewing was restricted under wartime conditions, and these imperfections were shipped as they were.
Rather than being mere flaws, such details now speak to the reality of wartime manufacturing. They reveal a moment in history when material, labor, and production were all shaped by necessity—and they give these garments a raw, utilitarian character that could never be reproduced through ordinary mass production alone.

With the wartime background of this era in mind, this jacket faithfully recreates the rough, utilitarian sewing specifications and simplified details found in garments of the period. Rather than correcting them into something overly refined, the deliberately uneven stitchwork and subtle “distortions” in construction have been carefully reproduced as part of the garment’s character. For this jacket, we developed a 16.0oz selvedge denim that captures both the oxidized, muted tone of indigo blue and the distinctly coarse texture associated with denim from that time.
The tack buttons are made from iron and feature a laurel wreath design, allowing them to develop a natural rust and patina through wear and age.
Another defining detail is the split back panel, commonly referred to as the “T-back.” Originally, this construction was typically seen only on larger sizes due to the limited width of the fabric, and it has since become a highly sought-after feature among enthusiasts. For this jacket, however, the T-back construction has been applied to every size, allowing you to enjoy the distinctive details of a wartime model while still choosing your proper fit.
