Indigo has been used as a natural dye across the world since ancient times.
In Japan, its history reaches back more than 1,200 years. In Kyoto in particular, a high-quality indigo once known as “Kyomizu-ai(KYOTO AQUA INDIGO)” was widely cultivated and highly prized.
Nurtured by the clear waters of Kyoto, this indigo produced an exceptionally vivid dyed color and was regarded as one of the finest of its kind. Its beauty came to be celebrated as “Kyo-asagi,” and it was known as one of the highest expressions of Japanese indigo.
Over time, however, the spread of imported indigo and synthetic dyes led to a gradual decline in its production. Eventually, around a century ago, Kyomizu-ai(KYOTO AQUA INDIGO) was believed to have disappeared.
In recent years, however, it was discovered that the seeds once thought to be lost had in fact been preserved and passed down by an indigo master in Tokushima.
Those seeds have now returned to Kyoto, and the long-lost tradition of indigo dyeing using Kyoto-grown indigo has finally been revived.
Today, much of the indigo commonly cultivated in Japan is the red-flowered variety known as Akabana Kojoko. Kyomizu-ai(KYOTO AQUA INDIGO), by contrast, is a rare white-flowered variety known as Shirobana Kojoko.
This Kyomizu-ai(KYOTO AQUA INDIGO) is carefully grown through pesticide-free organic cultivation, with every step from planting to dye preparation carried out with great care.
Its cultivation method is also distinctive. Like rice, it is grown in water, which is why it came to be called “Mizu-ai,” or water-grown indigo.
Indigo raised in flooded fields produces a pale, delicate shade of blue. It is an exceptionally sensitive material, so subtle that even the slightest difference in process can affect the final tone and create unevenness in the dye.
Facing that delicacy with patience and respect, each piece is dyed one by one with careful hands, preserving tradition while bringing out the quiet beauty of the material. This work is supported by the refined sensibility and handcraft of skilled women artisans.
Kyomizu-ai(KYOTO AQUA INDIGO) was once thought to be a phantom indigo.
