The Year of the Dragon Collection is a reprinting of selected dragon embroideries from among many vintage skajans in connection with the dragon, the Chinese zodiac sign for the year 2024. This work is a reprint of a very rare "double-sided dragon pattern" vintage from the early 1950s, featuring gorgeous embroidery suitable for the special edition of the Year of the Dragon.
The blue acetate fabric on the surface combines a dragon with a Japanese landscape reminiscent of clear skies. The magnificent composition of the dragon, which makes full use of many colored threads of the same color and encircles the five-story pagoda and even Mount Fuji in the background, is very unusual.
On the chest, an eagle and a tiger are depicted, and together with the back, the three major motifs of eagle, tiger, and dragon, as well as a landscape pattern, are covered in this extravagant pattern.
The green ribs with red lines, contrasting with the body color scheme, are also full of vintage charm.
The reversible side, on the other hand, features a powerful composition as if a dragon is approaching. The color scheme is based on brightly colored threads for the waves and clouds, and red for the ribs, with the colors adding to the black and silver body. The embroidery on the chest has the same eagle and tiger design as the front, but a closer look reveals a different use of colored threads. This is because the same "embroidery pattern" was used for both sides at that time, and it shows the craftsman's attention to detail in changing the colors to match the color of the fabric.
