SS39231 / SUN SURF SPECIAL EDITION HAWAIIAN SHIRT “FLOWER BLOOMING FOLKTALE”

This piece was produced by K. Isoshima Shoten's brand "Hale Aloha" in the late 1940s, and was sewn in Hawaii using fabric printed at a Japanese dyeing factory at the time.It is based on an unpublished vintage aloha shirt newly acquired in recent years.This is the first reprint of "Hale Aloha" under the actual name.

The motif of the design is "Takasago," one of the plays of Noh, a traditional Japanese performing art.The design is extremely auspicious, depicting an old couple holding a rake to gather good fortune and a broom to ward off evil spirits, as well as pine trees, bamboo, plum trees, cranes, and the rising sun, all of which are symbols of japan.

The Japanese immigrants of the time who crossed the ocean to live in Hawaii, thinking of their distant homeland, were supported by designs that reminded them of Japan.
Therefore, there are many oriental designs (Japanese patterns) on vintage Aloha shirts, and pieces based on traditional Japanese culture have also been found.
