Don Blanding is a writer who has made many accomplishments in the history of Hawaii. He was born and raised in Oklahoma. After graduating from high school, he worked as a theater usher while attending art school in Chicago. Influenced by a play he saw at the theater, "The Bird of Paradise," he decided to move to Hawaii. She worked as a copywriter for advertisements and published her poems with illustrations in a Honolulu daily newspaper, which became so popular that she published a book of her poems. He also designed pottery, and this "Leilani" was designed by Don Blanding for Vernon Kilns pottery and aloha shirts.
