VELVETEEN SOUVENIR JACKET
While most early souvenir jackets were made from reversible acetate fabric, there also existed variations crafted from velveteen—a plush fabric with a soft, brushed texture that offered a richer, more luxurious appearance. These versions were often padded for enhanced insulation, with the acetate lining featuring quilting to secure the padding and provide additional warmth and structure.

The so-called “Alaskajan,” inspired by the northern wilderness of Alaska. While the design featuring lightning bolts and polar bears is the most well-known, this version reproduces an actual vintage piece depicting drifting ice and a polar bear — an exceptionally rare variant even among Alaskajans. Alongside the bear is the aurora, a natural wonder visible only in the freezing northern skies. The sleeves are adorned with finely embroidered dog sleds, another beloved Alaskan motif.
The reversible side showcases a map of Alaska. The vivid blue “ALASKA” lettering contrasts beautifully against the orange body — a distinctive color combination unique to this model. This piece was originally produced in the late 1950s by *Kosho* at the request of the U.S. military, and sold at the PX on American bases in Alaska. The artwork was designed by Japanese craftsmen who referenced photographs and postcards of Alaska at the time, capturing the distant northern landscape through their own interpretation.
