This late-1950s style souvenir jacket faithfully reproduces a rare vintage piece originally manufactured by Kosho & Co., the predecessor of Tailor Toyo, at the request of the U.S. military. These jackets were produced for sale at PX (Post Exchange) stores on U.S. military bases in Alaska.
Known as “Alaska Jan,” original examples of this distinctive style are highly sought after and exceptionally rare in the vintage market. Among the various designs, those featuring lightning bolts and a polar bear, with dog sled embroidery adorning the sleeves, are particularly prized by collectors. Green velveteen is also an exceptionally rare color among surviving vintage souvenir jackets, with very few original examples known to exist. The combination of this unusual color and the iconic Alaska embroidery makes this a truly remarkable and highly collectible design.
The reversible side features an intricately embroidered map of Alaska. Among the several variations of Alaska map designs found on vintage souvenir jackets, this piece recreates one of the most elaborate and richly embroidered examples.
In addition to various place names, the design incorporates distinctive Alaskan motifs, including a Dall sheep, an igloo (traditional snow house), and Mount McKinley. Each element is carefully rendered in detailed embroidery, capturing the unique character of Alaska through the craftsmanship and artistic expression of the period.
Vintage Alaska souvenir jackets featuring such an extensive collection of embroidered motifs are particularly uncommon, making this elaborate design a fine example of the distinctive artistry and exceptional craftsmanship of late-1950s Japanese souvenir jackets.

VELVETEEN SOUVENIR JACKET
While early souvenir jackets were commonly made from acetate fabric in a reversible construction, period variations also included models crafted from velveteen, a fabric characterized by its soft, richly textured pile.
To provide additional warmth, these jackets featured an insulating layer of batting, while the acetate fabric on the reverse side was quilted to hold the padding securely in place.
