A striking Japan map motif brings together iconic scenery such as Mt. Fuji, a five-storied pagoda, and torii gates, encapsulating the beauty of Japan. This piece is a faithful reproduction of an early 1950s vintage design, distinguished by its lavish construction with little empty space—the back is almost entirely covered in embroidery. True to the style of that era, the body is rendered in green and off-white, accented by incongruous red ribbing that serves as a bold highlight.
The reversible side features a golden dragon embroidery, composed in a layout reminiscent of traditional Japanese painting, making clever use of negative space in contrast to the densely embroidered front. The dragon and tiger motifs on the chest remain the same on both sides, reflecting the way vintage jackets were originally made using the same “embroidery stencil” for both faces. Yet, subtle shifts in color tones tailored to the fabric ground reveal the meticulous craftsmanship of the embroiderers of the time.
