TT15390-119 / TAILOR TOYO Early 1950s Style Acetate Souvenir Jacket “JAPAN MAP” × “EAGLE & DRAGON”

The world's first "Souvenir Jacket Exhibition" was held at the Yokosuka Museum of Art in 2022.

In response to the many reprint requests received on the occasion of the exhibition, the patterns were carefully selected from the vintage Souvenir Jacket collection of Taylor Toyo, which was on display at the exhibition, and two A-sides (the main side) were incorporated into one luxurious "double A-side" piece.

The front side features a Japan map pattern from the early 1950s, with an eagle and a dragon staring at each other across a map of Japan.

Because the word "Japan" that would normally appear on the back is absent, the eagle is depicted as a large and powerful figure.

The alphabetical place names are concentrated in the west, suggesting that this jacket was sold at U.S. military bases in the Chugoku or Kyushu regions.

On the reversible side, an eagle and a dragon are staring at each other with Mt. Fuji in between, in a grand composition that seems to link with the embroidery on the surface.

Each motif is rather small but not deformed at all, and is delicately and boldly drawn by using horizontal swing embroidery.

ACETATE SOUVENIR JACKET

The most standard type of Souvenir jacket, reversible type with acetate fabric on both sides.

In the postwar period, acetate fabric was used for Sukajan, which was not silk, but an item that was not subject to material control.

Since there is no padding, it can be worn in any season, and its unique drape is also an attractive feature.
