In the 1960s, the U.S. Military Procurement Office in Japan chose to procure camouflage clothing in Japan.
This was because of the combination of advanced printing technology, speedy productivity, and cost advantages.
The pattern was left to the factories located throughout Japan, which is the reason why the Tiger Stripe pattern has given rise to countless variations.
Most of the early Tiger Stripes were made in Japan, but some were sent to Okinawa to be sewn, and some were made in Thailand and around Vietnam in the late Vietnam War period.
Tiger-striped jackets manufactured in the 1960s were mostly made with pockets on both sides of the chest, but in the 1970s, waist pockets were added as a variation.
Some jackets were dyed afterwards at the individual level to disguise stains caused by wear and to create a camouflage effect.
