John Meigs was born in Chicago, Illinois, on the American mainland. He studied sculpture and figure drawing at the Art Institute of Chicago, and later majored in journalism at the University of Redlands and UCLA. After working as a reporter, Meigs moved to Hawaii in 1938, where he joined the art department of the Honolulu Advertiser. Around 1940, while still working there, he began creating textile designs.
Meigs’ fresh and innovative artwork soon caught the attention of Hawaiian aloha shirt makers, and commissions for his designs quickly began to come in. During World War II, he enlisted in the United States Navy and visited Tahiti, a place closely associated with the painter Paul Gauguin. There, he became deeply captivated by the richness and beauty of Polynesian culture.
After being discharged from the military in 1947, Meigs returned to Hawaii. While working in public relations, he began preparing to make textile design his profession. As he stepped back into the world of design, word of his talent spread rapidly. Before long, orders were arriving not only from Hawaiian manufacturers, but also from major fabric wholesalers on the American mainland, including Cohn Hallmark (Kohama) and Tamburo Fabrics. At the same time, he continued to work actively as a painter, holding solo exhibitions at the Honolulu Academy of Arts, one of Hawaii’s long-established and respected museums.
By the 1950s, Meigs had become one of the leading textile designers working in Hawaii. Today, he is remembered as one of the great masters who helped shape the history of the aloha shirt. In the modern vintage market, his works remain highly regarded and are often traded at premium prices.
The reissued design, “WAIKIKI SAND,” captures the lively activities of Waikiki Beach with a humorous and charming touch. It has been confirmed that, at the time, this design was produced by more than eight different brands, showing just how popular it was. A wide variety of colorways were also created, further reflecting the strong appeal and enduring character of this celebrated aloha shirt design.

KEONI OF HAWAII
In 1996, we discovered that the legendary textile designer John “Keoni” Meigs, who had had a great contribution behind the development of the Hawaiian shirt history, was well alive. By meeting him in person, we could also encounter many of his unpublished designs from the 1940’s. These, along with his newly created designs, had been put into production under the name of “Keoni of Hawaii” for several years until his advanced age deterred him from creating more. In 2001, this series was succeeded by other artists who sympathize with John’s motto: Have the Hawaiian shirts be the bridge between Hawaii and Japan. Today, his great ambition toward the Hawaiian shirts still continues to be passed down through one and only shirt designs created by the artists all around the world.
