A striking design featuring a pair of herons clinging to willow branches submerged in a lakeside scene, wings fully spread in a dynamic pose. This piece is a rare example of 1950s Hawaiian aloha shirts that prominently depict animals—particularly outside of traditional Japanese motifs. Unusually for the era, it is printed not on the more common rayon, but on a textured cotton bark cloth, making it a highly collectible garment with both historical and aesthetic significance.

Under the leadership of Sadanosuke Hata, S. Hata Shoten flourished as a trading company that imported a wide range of goods from Japan and mainland America to support the daily lives of Japanese immigrants. Building on this success, Yoichi Hata—a relative of Sadanosuke—established a related business, Y. Hata Company, and opened the Hata Dry Goods Store in Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaii. There, he began selling Aloha shirts to local residents.
At the time, S. Hata Shoten also served as the distributor in Hawaii for Ichida, a major Japanese textile trading company. Thanks to this connection, the store had access to an impressive selection of rare fabrics, including rayon slub and other specialty materials. One such fabric was bark cloth, which is featured in this piece, reflecting the unique textile history that helped shape early Aloha wear.

SUN SURF SPECIAL EDITION
Aloha shirt - the garment that symbolizes the paradise called Hawaii. However, its origin has much to do with the Japanese immigrants to the islands, and thus the shirt designs range from tropical patterns to that of oriental. In the mid-20th century, when Hawaii became a popular tourism cite, Aloha shirts were in great demand as a souvenir. With this background did the designs become even more diverse, some of which still appear to this day as incredibly rare vintage. “Sun Surf Special Edition” has a high regard for these textile designers of the time, and it is dedicated to creating complete replicas of such exquisite vintage, by precisely mirroring such features as the multicolor and impressive patterns or the various use of fine details, many of which have tended to be lost over time.
