Featured in The Master Book of Hawaiian Shirts, the definitive volume on vintage aloha shirts supervised by Sun Surf, this “Spaceship” pattern was once revived in a special edition in the year 2000. Ever since, requests for its return have never ceased. The design is filled with a variety of imaginative, fantasy-driven visions of space, depicting spaceships reminiscent of tin toys, along with satellites and space stations. Rich with the nostalgic spirit of its era, it stands as a highly collectible piece that captures the optimism and wonder of mid-century space-age design.
In 1958, America successfully launched its first satellite, Explorer 1, igniting dreams across the nation of life beyond the earth and ushering in the dawn of the space age. This work is a true reflection of that moment in history. The shirt was originally created by Kuonakakai, an in-house brand established in 1948 by the long-standing manufacturer National Shirt Shops, a company founded in the early 1900s. Operating stores throughout the United States, the company handled a wide range of garments, from rayon shirts to printed flannel shirts and jackets, building a broad and distinctive legacy in American casual wear.
