In the early 1940s, as the United States was fully engaged in the Second World War, the nation was compelled to concentrate its resources on the war effort. As part of this initiative, the Wartime Production Board introduced strict regulations on the manufacture of civilian consumer goods, including clothing.
In particular, cotton and metal components used in garments—such as rivets and buttons—were prioritized for military use, and workwear items like jeans and denim jackets were heavily affected by these restrictions. Under the Board’s directives, details deemed non-essential or extravagant were systematically eliminated. This led to specification changes such as reducing the number of front tack buttons from five to four, and removing the flaps from chest pockets.
As a result, denim jackets of the period were significantly simplified in every aspect, evolving into rugged, stripped-down garments built purely for utility.
At the same time, many experienced sewing operators had been reassigned to military production, leaving factories to rely increasingly on less experienced workers. Consequently, rough sewing quality, uneven stitching, and visible distortions were far from uncommon. Yet even such imperfections remained untouched, as re-stitching and corrective work were also restricted under wartime conditions, and garments were shipped as they were.
With this wartime background in mind, Studio D’Artisan has carefully recreated the crude, purely functional sewing specifications and simplified details that defined the era. Deliberately irregular stitch work and subtle structural “misalignments” have been faithfully expressed, while the dull indigo blue tone reminiscent of oxidized denim and the dry, coarse texture unique to the period have been incorporated into the brand’s signature No.100 series 15.0oz selvedge denim.
For the tack buttons, iron-made laurel wreath buttons have been selected, allowing a natural rusted patina to emerge beautifully over time.
The back panel is constructed with a so-called “T-back” center seam, a detail applied consistently across all sizes.
