tt15974-128
TT15974-128 / TAILOR TOYO Mid 1950s Style Velveteen Souvenir Jacket “WHITE DRAGON” × “JAPAN MAP”

Embroidered across the deep navy velveteen fabric is a striking white dragon, its long, serpentine body weaving in and out of the clouds as it surges forward. Faithfully reflecting the details of an original mid-1950s vintage piece, gray threads are used to define the contours of the dragon’s face and individual scales, enhancing the depth and dimensional character of the traditional *yokofuri* (free-motion) embroidery. Another distinctive feature is the plain white ribbing without stripes, a detail commonly found on velveteen souvenir jackets of the period.
The reversible side features a colorful “Japan Map” design, with a map of Japan as its central motif. The inclusion of the Korean Peninsula indicates that the original design dates from the period following the Korean War. Place names embroidered in vibrant colored threads identify major Japanese cities, popular sightseeing destinations, and locations of U.S. military bases. This distinctive composition reflects the historical origins of the souvenir jacket, which was originally created as a keepsake for American servicemen stationed in Japan.
