During WWII, facing a severe shortage of leather, the Army reviewed production methods and developed a flight jacket made of cotton twill, suitable for mass production. The lining used alpaca mohair wool pile, which was less bulky and lighter than sheepskin yet highly insulating. Although the exterior resembled the “AN” series such as AN6552 or AN-J-3A used jointly by the Army and Navy, the Army Air Forces did not fully adopt the “AN” series for joint use. Instead, the B-10 was adopted as a new fabric jacket for mid-temperature use.
