SS39059 / SUN SURF SPECIAL EDITION HAWAIIAN SHIRT "LAND OF ALOHA".
The Hawaii Tourism Association and other organizations sponsored a campaign to designate the year 2000, the closing year of the 20th century, as the Year of the Aloha Shirt. The "Land of Aloha" shirt graced the posters of the campaign. The fabric, printed in 21 different colors, was exported from Kyoto to Hawaii at the time, showing the exquisite Japanese technique. This pattern is one that requires a very high level of skill to reproduce due to its precise and delicate pattern matching and the large number of colors (21). Based on the experience of past reprints, further improvements have been made and the pattern has been reprinted again.
Isamu Takabuki, a Hawaiian-born Japanese American with dual citizenship, bought an old school building in Kyoto immediately after the war and started a factory called "Aloha Trading" specializing in printing fabrics for export to Hawaii. He also established a trading company, "Victory Imports" in Hawaii, and its subsidiary, "Pacific Trading" in Osaka, establishing the distribution of fabrics from Japan to Hawaii. It is to the credit of Japanese immigrants that this design, which would not have existed without Japanese printing technology, reigns as a masterpiece that is still talked about today.
